![]() ![]() ![]() What inspires me is that anyone can see God use their circumstances as a platform for courage – when they are abandoned completely to God.Ģ.These seven women changed the course of history. The focus is on “ordinary” not “women.” I know ordinary women named Joan, Suzanna, Hannah, Maria, Corrie, Teresa and Rosa. Ordinary women can be used in extraordinary ways by God. My wife Jocelyn read “7 Women” and was quick to loan it to her friends and have it stocked in our church’s bookstore. You won’t regret an investment in a personal copy of the book. I’m grateful to Metaxas for introducing me to seven new heroes of faith. I’d never heard of Hannah More or Maria Skobtsova and my library shelves were void of books about the other five. Metaxas says “biographies enable us to slip the strictures of time and provide a bracing corrective to our tendency to see everything in the dark glass of our own era, with all its blind spots, mores, beams and distortions.” Biographies ![]() My personal library is stocked with biographies of accomplished athletes, Civil War generals, politicians, missionaries, innovators and entrepreneurs. I can readily enjoy a pleasant weekend wrapped up in stories well told. Metaxas is a master writer of biographies. He highlights the stories of Joan of Arc, Suzanna Wesley, Hannah More, Maria Skobtsova, Corrie ten Boom, Mother Teresa, and Rosa Parks. “7 Women And The Secret Of Their Greatness” is the latest Eric Metaxas page turner. ![]()

He experienced gender dysphoria in youth, and the decision to transition from a tomboyish girl to a transman came slowly. Hartke was “assigned female at birth,” which is how trans people and their allies describe a person’s biological sex. ![]() Hartke’s identity is as important to the book as his arguments. But this does not negate the importance of the work, which clarifies the theological and pastoral fault lines on this topic. Coming from a mainline Lutheran perspective, this volume stakes its ground in predictable places hermeneutically. Into this infant conversation comes Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians, by Austen Hartke. What does the Bible have to say about living life in a gender-nonconforming way? What can faithfulness to Christ look like for a person who desires-who might even say needs-to live such a life? Most churches and Christians find themselves exposed due to their lack of theological and pastoral preparation. ![]() Transgender questions today carry an urgency unimaginable even five years ago. ![]() ![]() ![]() 'Up From Slavery' is an autobiography of Booker T. ![]() Washington explained that the integration of practical subjects is partly designed to reassure the white community as to the usefulness of educating black people.
